Ohio:.Gift IdeasCORNER BROOK - Salmon conservationists in Western Newfoundland are worried about the recent stretch of warm and dry weather.Don Ivany of the Atlantic Salmon Federation says the salmon are sitting ducks for poachers because of low water levels.Many rivers in Western Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula have all but dried up. Low water usually means fish tend to pool up and they become very vulnerable to poaching, Ivany says. That's of great concern to us this time of the year. Ivany says even legal hook-and-release fishing can be stressful because the salmon lack oxygen in the warm water.Effective one hour after sunset Wednesday, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is closing nine rivers from Bay of Islands north to Hawkes Bay.Paul Caines, acting chief of enforcement for the region, says the weather this summer has made for poor conditions in salmon rivers. The last month, of July, saw very limited precipitation and the bit of rain that fell in the last week or so is just enough to make the grass wet, actually, Caines says. There's been no discernible increase in water levels or drops in water temperatures.
