Unfortunately for the people of Europe, their vision on how best to tackle the global terror threat leaves a lot to be desired. We will not defeat terrorism only with the use of force and weapons, said Schröder. The French president went further still, urging Europe to Join together to end conflicts that fuel anger and frustration among people. We must fight poverty, humiliation and injustice which create a fertile ground for violence, he added.Maybe someone should point out to Chirac that the terrorists who added France to the Islamist hit list yesterday claim that the root causes of their grievance have nothing to do with poverty or injustice, but are based on France's headscarf ban and a 1300 year-old French military victory against the Moors.Chirac's foreign minister, Dominique de Villepin, was more specific than his boss:Villepin said that Terrorism was 'gaining' because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Iraq.'We can't ignore the fact that there are two hotbeds that are feeding instability and terrorism around the world,' Villepin told the French radio station RTL.Emboldened by the electoral victory of the socialists in Spain on Sunday - the incoming government in Spain has vowed to withdraw troops from Iraq and has criticized the war itself - Villepin said that 'it is essential to draw lessons' from the Iraq episode and realize that it was an 'error.' Villepin's outburst may play well with the suddenly swollen ranks of Old Europeans but will infuriate Britain and America. Perhaps that is the point - France is seizing Spain's tragedy to drive a wedge between those who believe in bringing the fight to the terrorists and those who urge a more 'nuanced' view of terrorism.According to these people, we must fight a war without relying on weapons. We must fight poverty rather than bombers.Worst of all, according to Villepin, the Americans and the Jews got us into this mess: A disturbing, unreformed rappel from Vichy.Spain's new leader, who owes his job to Islamist terror, can't toe the Franco-German line quickly enough. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has already announced he will withdraw Spanish troops from Iraq. He has enthusiastically embraced the Franco-German vision of defending Europe from terrorism.Other also-ran EU nations are lining up behind this trio.Britain's prime minister Tony Blair continues to stand firm, but can't put his country fast enough under European tutelage via the new EU constitution. Furthermore, Blair must be the only man on the planet who can see common ground between the continental aggressive pacifist view and his own foreign policy.His home policy cannot help his increasingly lonely fight against terror.Britain is importing migrants at a rate of 11,000 a week. This is the largest wave of immigration the country has ever known.
