They thought it was the strangest thing, she admits. But later they were all very appreciative. Schultz, office manager at the Hand Rehabilitation Center of San Diego, sees many devices that benefit patients, and she thought her older relatives could use the peelers with large, rubberized grips. (The grips) take a lot of tension out of the fingers and forearms. You don't have to close your hand as much. A practical gift-giver, Schultz also bought a reacher for a friend of hers who has osteoporosis. The device has a squeezable grip with pinchers on the other end of a long arm to grasp small items. She couldn't bend down easily to pick things up. She had to call someone to pick up a pencil after she dropped it. Gifts that make life easier are a nice idea. Particularly if you have relatives who have experienced a change of functioning, from arthritis to vision problems. There are gadgets for almost every need or physical condition. Many of these products have been available for younger people with disabilities and are now of interest to older adults who are gradually losing functioning in some area. There are talking watches for people with vision problems, amplified phones for those with hearing problems, steady writing pens for people with tremors, many items that make gripping easier, tools to help people dress who have had strokes, foldable and portable ramps, etc. There are tons of catalogs, and the Internet is loaded with medical supply and specialty companies with online assistive technology. The San Diego Center for the Blind -- 5922 El Cajon Blvd.; (619) 583-1542 -- has its own gift shop for people with vision problems. around to medical supply companies near you and see what they might have available. In a few San Diego County locations, Sav-On has Health 'n' Home sections that carry medical supplies, including small assistive devices. Many alternativesNot only do these specialty products help people with general daily functioning, but they can make a big difference for hobbyists. Sometimes people quit what they enjoy when they start having physical problems doing it. In many cases, they can get back in action with the right tools. Whatever your passion is, don't give it up, says Jeanie Booth-Rex from the Challenge Center -- 5540 Lake Parkway, La Mesa; (619) 667-8644 -- a gym for people who need specialized equipment. You might have to modify how you do things, but you can still enjoy what gives you pleasure. Booth-Rex thought she'd have to give up gardening after an accident limited her mobility. But she learned about raised beds, self-watering devices and modified gardening tools. Now she's in the process of canning tomatoes from her 32 plants. There are bowling-ball pushers for people who like to bowl, page turners for people who like to read, crochet aids, adaptive fishing poles, jumbo checkers, whatever people like to do, she says. Don't let others tell you that you can't do something anymore. If you love to play bridge or to knit, (there's help) out there. The following are a few Internet Web sites and companies with helpful items:Independent Living Products -- ( ) 377-8033 or ilp-online : Goes beyond the typical medical supply items to include such devices as a check-writing guide, folding reacher, even a leg-lifter. Has lists of gift ideas for people with various diagnoses, such as Parkinson's disease, arthritis and fibromyalgia.North Coast Medical -- ( ) 235-7054 or ncmedical : Several choices of helpful gifts, including a device that would make keys easier to turn, plus several dressing aids.Dynamic Living -- ( ) 940-0605 or dynamic-living : Easy-to-use items for many daily tasks. Has interesting game aids, such as low-vision dice and automatic card shuffler. Also has a book for people who have had strokes, titled One-Handed in a Two-Handed World, by Tommye K. Mayer.AdaptAbility -- ( ) 288-9941 or adaptability : Items include an oversized cribbage board, plus a large-print dictionary and thesaurus.Access to Recreation -- ( ) 634-4351 or accesstorecreation : Focuses on sports and games for people with physical limitations.Age-In-Place (or E-Pill) -- ( ) 549-0095 or age-in-place : Specializes in various medication reminders, which can be great gifts for people who have trouble remembering to take their pills. There is a talking prescription reminder and a vibrating watch, among other items.Jody Shephard, director of clinical services at the San Diego Center for the Blind, reminds people that they don't have to buy gifts but can make creative items to help seniors. Pointing to low-vision aids as an example, she recommends making someone a large-print address book using a three-ring notebook and printing one page for each person/address. She also suggests buying a can of sticky puffy paint at a crafts store and offering to label high-contrast numbers on the microwave and the stove. Or offering to label clothing with colors that are hard to distinguish. And she suggests the gift of time: Offer to come out once a week and read the mail or offer to take them to the grocery store regularly. That means a lot. Denise Nelesen, who works in the county Office of Aging and Independence Services, is a licensed seniors counselor. Write to her c/o The San Diego Union-Tribune, P.O.
