The Art of Michael Bedard

Toon Zone Forum Cartoons Cartoon Network ForumsBrowse Categories:Unexpected Venture After developing the product [member management/POS system] we showcased it at the industry's largest trade expo, and the response we received from companies worldwide was overwhelming, says Brent Zempel, director of IT, Life Time Fitness. In response to the demand, Life Time Fitness decided to form a separate entity called Averisoft in order to offer these technological solutions to the health and fitness industry. The solutions currently offered include the member management system, paperless contracts, online scheduling, and membership card software. The end result is the first and only health and fitness club management system based on Internet standards and open architecture that can be leveraged and customized for a variety of industry needs. The System That Started It AllThe member management/POS system is the largest and most extensive of the applications accessible through the Life Time Fitness corporate Intranet. The multimillion dollar system stores membership and payment data for hundreds of thousands of members and provides intranet and Internet functionality to employees and customers through web and kiosk mediums, handling hundreds of millions of transactions. In addition, the new system provides reporting and analytics for customer relationship management and call center integration. The application is based on a 4-tier architecture consisting of a presentation layer, workflow layer, business logic layer, and data access layer.Building BlocksApplication Server: WebLogicEnterprise JavaBeans (EJB) technology-based components: WebLogic's framework based on EJB technology, entity and session beans developed in-house, scheduling engine based on EJB technology from xTimeServlets: TomcatJavaServer Pages (JSP) technology: ApacheJava Naming and Directory Interface (J.N.D.I.) API: iPlanet Lightweight Directory Access Protocol serverOS: UNIX FreeBSD, Windows NT, Mac OS, Solaris 8 Operating EnvironmentJavaServer Pages software was used to implement the presentation layer, which is responsible for displaying system information and gathering user input. To implement the workflow layer, which controls the flow of user interface web pages, servlets were used. The business logic layer was implemented using EJB components; session beans were used for business process logic, and container managed entity beans were used for business entity logic. Finally, the data access layer was implemented using Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) technology and container managed entity beans. A consistent logging framework was used throughout the application for monitoring and error notification using the JavaMail API, while Lightweight Directory Access Protocol was used for user authentication.Making the SwitchLife Time's commitment to Java technology more than a year ago meant completely switching gears. We had an all-Microsoft shop and had a lot of Microsoft certified talent in-house, says Zempel. However, Microsoft's technology was unable to scale with our business, was proprietary, and required vendor lock-in. We began looking for something that could support the company's growth and handle the complexities of an enterprise system. Life Time spent months on due diligence, looking at various management systems products. Still concerned with lack of support and market acceptance, they turned to Java technology and Sun Microsystems. We listened to the experiences other companies were having with Java technology, and we were impressed. We also brought in several consultants with backgrounds in products from both Microsoft and Sun. The majority leaned heavily toward Sun's products, recalls Zempel.Philip Nel's Literary Links: Children's LiteratureGoddesses: PostersSuggested ReadingWomen in Jazz, Blues, Soul, R&B 6.00US 11.63 EUR8.58V is for Volunteer: A Tennessee Alphabet by Michael ShouldersDaniel's Duck by Clyde Robert BullaCleveland Lee's Beale Street Band by Art FlowersOur Neighbor is a Strange, Strange Man by Tres SeymourSwamp Angel by Anne IsaacsA Band of Angels by Deborah HopkinsonWilma Unlimited by Kathleen KrullThe Peabody DucksEven though Sitting Ducks is a quirky world, the situations that the characters find themselves in are very familiar.
