He first entered the art marketplace in 1977 with a series of whimsical and allegorical art prints - many of which are still in print today. Bedard's Sitting Ducks poster is one of the most widely recognized and largest selling posters in the history of the medium. He has consistently topped the list of best-selling poster artists for nearly twenty years. Very few artists can make a similar claim.In the early eighties, Bedard was looking for a way to express a broad range of feelings about the human condition and wanted to use humor as a vehicle for addressing very serious issues such as vulnerability, alienation and anxiety, as well as social and political observations. Bedard chose the duck because it symbolized the vulnerability and attitude that comprises the human psyche.The duck character was an excellent choice because of the nature of the animal itself. Even though a duck is vulnerable to attack by superior forces, this wonderful creature displays an aggressive attitude when confronted by danger. The duck's only defense is this bluff that creates uncertainty and fear with its adversaries. This attitude is what has made the duck an appropriate icon for challenging the problems that threaten us all. The duck characters immediately struck a chord with people about how fragile we feel in these modern times. The illusion that creature comforts create a safety zone from the dangers of life is so pervasive that many actually hide behind these paper-thin walls and feel protected.The Sitting Duck message pokes a funny hole through this fragile concept. It shows that even when one is having a safe moment relaxing with friends on a lounge chair with a favorite drink; one can suddenly become a target of one of life's merciless hunters. That theme of vulnerability carries through the Bedard duck series and has allowed the artist to expand his concept to examine the frailty of politics ( Failure of Marxism and Failure of Capitalism ) and even relationships ( Living Together and Ship of Fools ).Bedard says, I had no idea that these little characters would become so popular but I take great pleasure in that they've become universally accepted. As an artist, I am grateful to be able to communicate through a vehicle that transcends all language and cultural barriers. Bedard's work, both on the canvas and on the screen, is characterized by his uncanny ability to create an image with depth in both artistic quality and meaning. There is nearly always a social commentary that lies underneath his whimsical imagery. One must look beyond the simple visual statement employed by the composition to the real purpose of the painting -- usually an important social issue that concerns us all.Bedard has had numerous sold out one-man exhibitions in and around his current Los Angeles residence. His children's book, Sitting Ducks , has won three prestigious international awards for children's literature and his children's television show of the same name is tremendously popular in 48 countries. In Japan nearly one out of two children watch the show. Limited Edition Art Prints.TAMPA - Busch Gardens' latest attraction to draw crowds is a musical show set to an African jungle theme, with elaborately costumed characters, and insect and animal puppets galore.Tampa-based Busch spared no expense on the show, called Katonga, which opened in April, going so far as to hire some of the same artists who put the Lion King on Broadway for the Disney Co.Katonga, say theme park industry experts, is more than just a new attraction. It's the latest effort by Busch Gardens to capture some of the Disney magic and reverse three years of sagging attendance at a time when Disney's competing animal theme park near Orlando, Animal Kingdom, is not experiencing attendance declines.For much of its 45-year history, Busch Gardens had a monopoly in Central Florida, running a theme park that featured live animals, amusement rides and floral displays. That changed in 1998 when Disney opened its Animal Kingdom park just 80 miles away, adding to its collection of theme parks near Orlando.Disney spent more than million on Animal Kingdom. It sent park designers to Africa and Asia to get ideas and hired top zoological and amusement ride experts to create attractions, including a safari-type tour.Animals are displayed in their natural habitat. Visitors explore the park on foot or by jeep. Hidden barriers, rather than zoo-type cages separate animals from people. The goal: give visitors the feeling they were on a foreign trip.Another key element of Disney's Animal Kingdom park is its Festival of the Lion King show, which is built around an African theme.Modeling SuccessWhen Busch Gardens opened its heavily-promoted Katonga show, it raised questions among some industry experts whether it was just copying Disney attractions as a way to boost tourism.Executives at Busch Gardens, which is owned by Anheuser-Busch Co., deny the park is copying Disney attractions in Orlando. However, they admit that Disney has upped the ante in the battle for tourists and dollars.``No question, Disney has raised the bar,'' says Don Brown, Busch Gardens' general manager.Brown says Busch sees competition with Disney as a healthy aspect of the business, keeping Busch Gardens on its toes.Some experts say Busch Gardens may have to better or match some of Disney's moves if it wants to survive.Abraham Pizam, dean of the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, notes that Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, which featured water skiing and flower displays, didn't change with the times. Attendance flagged and the park closed in April 2003. It is scheduled to reopen in July under new ownership.Pizam said some of Busch Gardens attraction are out-of- date and the park may have to rethink them to keep visitors coming back. For example, while visitors to Animal Kingdom are transported to Africa and Asia on safari jeeps, Busch Gardens gives more the feeling of a traditional zoo, he said. ``Disney understood that today's visitors want to be entertained by participating in adventure activities,'' Pizam said. ``Busch Gardens and other parm ks thought they could continue to do it the way they did in the past,'' he said. ``They're finally beginning to realize that the consumer wants to be entertained.''Busch Garden's new push comes as it is trying to recover from significant attendance declines at the park off Busch Boulevard.Attendance peaked in 2000 at 5 million visitors after the introduction of a heavily discounted season pass for Florida residents called the Fun Card.Attendance has slid in each of the last three years, though, reaching a low of 4.3 million visitors in 2003, show figures from Amusement Business, a trade journal that tracks theme park attendance.Meanwhile, attendance at Disney's Animal Kingdom has remained steady at 7.3 million visitors for the past two years, Amusement Business says.Experts say it's unclear whether the attendance downturn at Busch Gardens is due to economic factors or Animal Kingdom siphoning Busch's business.They also note that the past several years have been challenging for the theme park industry. The economic downturn and fears of terrorism have hurt tourism traffic to Florida overall.As a result, Busch has been rolling out new attractions to compete for tourist dollars, industry experts say.Battle For CrowdsAfter 15 years of ice skating shows, Katongais Busch's latest effort to challenge Disney.Others include a new mega roller coaster, it's sixth. Busch has made no formal announcements about the project, but plans on file with the city of Tampa show the coaster will feature an ancient Africa theme, and aim to give riders the feeling of being part of an African adventure.Some industry experts expect the coaster to offer the kind of adventure-filled experience that Disney has mastered at its theme parks.Busch's roller coaster project comes as Animal Kingdom is constructing its first major thrill ride, Exposition Everest, a 100 million roller coaster that Disney officials say will be its most ambitious theme park attraction yet.Meanwhile, Busch Gardens has taken the fight to Orlando, offering round trip bus tours from key points in the Orlando area directly to its front gate. Today, up to 10 buses make the trip daily. The cost for riders: 10 round trip.Some Busch Gardens projects have not turned out as well as expected. Rhino Rally, an adventure in which visitors are driven around in a jeep, has been plagued by mechanical problems ever since it opened in 2001. And plans for a resort hotel by the park have not materialized, while Disney has gone on to build a spectacular lodge near Animal Kingdom.Brown says that despite the bumps the park is proud of its record.``We're been here for more than 40 years. You're going to have an advantage when you build a park from the ground up,'' he said, referring to Disney. Still, he says, no theme park in Florida offers the variety Busch does: spectacular amusement rides like roller coasters, animals, shows and flower displays.A Wild BeginningBusch Gardens' unique blend of animals, amusement rides and floral displays roots date back to 1959 when tropical bird displays and the Busch family's African animal collection were put on display outside its Tampa brewery. Floral displays, wild animals and wild roller coasters followed.In 1965, Busch Gardens captured the attention of animal lovers worldwide for letting animals roam loose on 79 acres, called the Serengeti Plains, at a time when most zoos still had animals locked in cages.The Serengeti Plains, which can be toured by train, skyride or individual truck tours remains a top attraction today.Disney's Animal Kingdom has tried to best Busch's Serengeti by giving visitors the impression there are no animal barriers and having park workers on hand ready to offer detailed explanations of animals and their habitats. Busch offers a ``meet the keeper'' program, but only at certain times during the week.Still, Busch Gardens is a major tourism attraction in its own right, said Jack Brown, the director of the zoo technology program at Sante Fe Community College in Gainesville, who has trained staff for both parks.He said Disney enjoyed a major advantage building their park from scratch in the 1990s. The company was able to design a zoological park that would be the envy of many, using loads of money, the latest techniques and a larger tract of land.``It's hard to catch up with someone like Disney without a huge infusion of money,'' he said.Brown at Busch Gardens said the park has a master improvement plan in the works and that an element of that plan will be revealed in a few months. He declined to discuss specifics, but says park officials expect it to be a major draw.Busch also is trying to enhance animal viewing experiences, he said, noting that 26 acres of the Serengeti Plain were updated last year and are now the home of three white rhinoceros.Busch Garden officials declined to disclose how much its parent, Anheuser-Busch, will invest in the park in the near future.Busch Gardens and the eight other theme parks owned by the beer company, including Sea World in Orlando, had pre-tax profits of 163 million in 2003 on revenue of 811 million, according to their financial filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.Ultimately, the amusement park is a side business when compared to Anheuser's beer business. Amusement park dollars contribute less than five percent to the 3 billion in pre-tax profits the publicly traded company reported earning in 2003.For Disney, theme parks are a core business. More than 20 percent of Disney's 27 billion in revenue in 2003 came from the theme park business.
