Kristan Reed investigates one of those companies - a French publisher that actually knows how to make money.Competition in the videogame publishing sector has never been fiercer. For every EA, Take-Two and Activision there are a dozen more failing softcos, struggling to adjust to the ever-changing market conditions.Yet against the odds, a small, dynamic French company by the name of LSP is proving that you dont have to have the clout of the big guns to make an impression in the market.Established back in 1999, the Marseille based company has already released 43 products across eight platforms, selling some three million units in the process. With its mass market strategy of working with big name film companies such as Universal, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, and DreamWorks, LSP has had some notable successes since it became wholly independent (in 2001), such as the 200,000 selling Game Boy Color title Antz, the huge selling multi-platform hit Inspector Gadget, and most recently the critically and commercially successful GBA/PSone side scrolling shooter CT: Special Forces. But its the companys decision to target games at maturing platforms that other publishers deemed unworthy that has paid off. While most in the industry chased the next gen honey pot from the word go, LSPs strategy was to produce mass market games on platforms that not only had a huge existing installed base, but were relatively cheap to produce games for, as the firms marketing director Albric Guigou points out: For every release we try to stick to the same strategy, and do not take many chances. We aim all our games at the mass market, targeting them at families and kids, which allow us to do original properties on the right platforms and properties to minimize risk he says, citing its internally developed GBA success CT: Special Forces as an example. But with the changing market conditions, LSP is shifting its focus towards the next gen: When the new platforms werent well established we were focussing on the PSone PC and GBA. Were now looking towards the next gen as the installed base for the PS2 becomes more mass market, and moving away from our PSone focus, he says. With the next gen console installed base entering its mass market phase (particularly the PS2) and comparatively lower R&D across all platforms, its easy to see why the firm is ready to enter the most ambitious phase of its history. With the Universal license Sitting Ducks having recently been acquired for a four SKU launch later this year, LSP is readying another multi platform announcement that is set to enhance the firms growing reputation even further just prior to this years showcase E3 event in a few weeks time. Were looking at new and current licenses, says Guigou, and working on a property that we cant announce yet that will be backed by a massive marketing plan. And with partners such as Proctor and Gamble, Panini, McDonalds and Universal working alongside the firm for the hush hush project, LSP is certainly rubbing shoulders with the right companies for building brand awareness. But LSP is more than aware it needs to keep its growth ambitions in check if it is to build after all, this is a firm with a headcount of just 25: Of course we want to get bigger, and we think there is room for average sized publishers such as LSP. But its important for us to not overstretch ourselves and go for projects we cant handle. Want to build step by step. Its next step will be to build awareness of Sitting Ducks, a curious looking game based on Universal Studios whimsical CGI childrens animated series of the same name, which has just commenced a 13 week run on C-ITV.Described as platform action with the freedom of GTA, the title is a little different from your average platformer, with gamers running, jumping and, erm, quacking around the quirky world of DuckTown gamers, where the Ducks like to engage in a spot of footy with the Alligators, as well as riding scooters. As you do when youre a Duck named (cough) Bill. From the brief gameplay footage we were shown, the title has plenty of potential, if the delightfully detailed rendered environments and personality strewn characters were representative of in game action. According to LSP, its Sitting Ducks game uses a ground breaking modelling and animation system, and all the artwork from the TV show has been available to the team for the game. With its first product out on PC (Rebel) toward the latter end of the year, its first PS2 and Xbox titles, and more big licenses coming to its stable, its heartening to see a smaller publisher capable of taking on the corporate giants at their own game.
