Colour SupplementStranger in ParadiseArt Print39 x 24 inKate Bosworth« The Real NHL Standings? | Main | NHL Daily Quick Fix: Weekend Wrap »December 05, 2003NHL Daily Quick Fix: Sitting DucksWhatever happened to the Anaheim Might Ducks? The defense is awful, they're an easy mark on the road, and J.S. Giguere looks like a fire hydrant in net. On Friday, Giguere gives up 5 goals on 28 shots. He's replaced for the second straight game, and the Ducks lose 6-2 to Atlanta. Marc Savard has two goals and an assist for the Thrashers; rookie Joffrey Lupul scores both Anaheim goals. The Ducks have one win in nine games, and don't look particularly bothered about getting the next one. We're about to find out what kind of coach Mike Babcock is. Elsewhere on Friday's schedule:The final line change of the game costs the Minnesota Wild in Calgary. With all hands headed for the bench, the Wild are virtually defenseless when Oleg Saprykin and Jarome Iginla burst in on a 2-on-1. Iginla pots the rebound with 23 seconds left to give the Flames a 2-1 victory. Calgary had tied the game earlier in the third period on a goal by the suddenly unstoppable Shean Donovan. With 8 goals this season, Donovan will surely threaten his previous career high of 13.The Hurricanes and Canadiens are among the lowest scoring teams in the game, so a 1-1 draw comes as no surprise. Kevyn Adams scores a shorthanded goal for Carolina in the first; Mike Ribiero ties it for Montreal in the third. The Canadiens' are four games without a loss, keeping them in the middle of the pack in the East.Philadelphia holds off a strong effort by the Phoenix Coyotes to hang on for a 3-2 victory. The Flyers' power play makes the difference again, with John Leclair scoring the winning goal. It's the Coyotes' first loss on what has been a good road trip.Looking for further details? It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 Jolly Roger fighter jets, made possible by the Navy's generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the DVD edition.Fine Art Printing - MC612 - 31 Min 29.95Master printers, Jeff Wasserman and Anthony Michel, who have two of the last remaining hand print workshops in the Art Community, discuss two time-honored methods of Fine Art Printing. They explain Fine Art Printing and how it differs from other types of printing and how a lithograph differs from a Serigraph, as well as how one becomes a Fine Art printer.ART4SALE ~ SWAHN GALLERIES & DESIGN ~ CALL 30.5050 to Buy, Sell, Trade, ConsignSouthwestern (471)
