SuperDuperClub Gina GershonThese movies are so overrated beyond credibilityHype will fuel more hype, to the point where everyone must conform to it. Tarantino's vanity films are idiotic. First of all they are racist (a blond woman pointedly kills all the asians and a black woman in vol. 1, while Sonny Chiba and Gordon Liu both play retrotypical servant/sidekick/loyal trainer to the mainstream stars), and secondly they're retreads of sexism (all the women murder each other at the behest of a powerful male figure in a style of filming that titillates males). And they're fetishized by a relatively small cult into being the most over-praised films in history. There's nothing even creative or memorable about them, vol. 2 is one long boring pretentious talkfest about nothing, comic books and trite campy exchanges that reveal nothing close to characterization, just poses. That's what they amount to: poses and weak attempts to reference better movies that in their day were defiantly against the anglo-centric attitude celebrated here. What Kinji Fukasaku socially-critical gangster movie was about nothing, and for nothing just camp appeal and blood effects?
