Paddington's Colors (AMERICAN)by Michael Bond N.T. Atkens AMERICANA SERIES Steaming Down the Bayou#10 9.95 -Nov-21 19:42 At first glance Sitting Ducks, the new picture book by pop artist Michael Bedard, is an amusing children's story about and unlikely friendship between a duck and an alligator who intends to eat the duck. But as with Bedard's art which has netted millions in retail sales world wide and soon will be featured in a Warner Brothers feature film and a Polygram TV series, people who have seen the book keep finding other meanings. Some say Sitting Ducks, which will be published by Putnum in October, is about vegetarianism; others think it's a commentary on the evils of consumerism, and still others believe it shows how hard it is to develop trust between people of different backgrounds.Michael Bedard isn't surprised at the varying interpretations, or that the book appears to both kids and adults. Primarily known as a poster artist and animator, Bedard says that he is conciously leaves space in his art for people to find their own meaning. My posters usually depict a scene that's on the brink of something happening, he explains. I leave it to the viewers to imagine what will happen next. His best-known poster, Sitting Ducks , from which the book takes its name, is a good exampel. In that piece, three ducks relax poolside, while one looks over his shoulder at two bullet holes in the wall behind them. Some people accuse me of having black humor, saying, How can you do that to the poor ducks? My response is, I haven't done anything to the ducks, you have. How do you know they will be shot? They may go on to live a happy life. Bedard explains that his challenge in writing a children's book was to develop a bull story, while still leaving room in the text and art for readers to take his ideas further. When I hear people are reading momre into the story than I put in, I know it's working. he says, acknowledging that Sitting Ducks can be enjoyed on many levels. I'm always surprised and delighted by how far kids can go with the book. Bedard says. They've made some astonishing observations about how they feel about Sitting Ducks and why they like it. The most common response from kids and adults is that it's a book about friendship. Adults may find Bedard's illustrations quite familiar. He has ben an internationally best-selling poster artist for more than 20 years with overseas sales to ten nations, including Germany, Japan, Switzerland, and Australia. He delighted to bring his most popular characters to a picture book format. I love how distilled children's book stories are. They are closer to what I would call true storytelling than any other literary form. he says. I particularly admire the work of Chris Van Allsburg, Maurice Sendak, and of course, Dr. Seuss. In Sitting Ducks, Michael Bedard has set up a world populated by ducks who are manufactured in a factory staffed by alligators and raised in Ducktown with the sole purpose of becoming a delicious meal. The ducks, blissfully unaware of their eventual fate, docilely stuff themselves and never question the status quo in their alligator-eat-duck world. Everything changes when one duck learns the truth - and finds a path to freedom. The humor in my work comes from simple observations of human behavior and the curious ironies of life. Bedard explains. The strange actions of humans are better understood when we're able to step back and look at an allegorical situation. According to Bedard, the duck strikes a universal chord because it mirrors a common experience of vulnerability. Although a duck is the prey of any number of more powerful adversaries this wonderful creature displays an aggressive attitude when confronted by danger. For Bedard, this combination of vulnerability and bravado is a fitting expression of the fragility human beings feel when bluffing their way through the complications of modern life.# # #SITTING DUCKSby Michael BedardAll AgesISBN: 0-399-288-17-0Pub.
