Celebrator Beer NewsExerpts from the March 25, 2004 edition of the Hartford Courant Olde School BarleywineBarleywines, especially those that now dominate the niche, are notoriously huge, potent brews, but, apparently, not big and strong enough for that innovative group of brewers from Delaware. The Dogfish Head Brewery's interpretation of barleywine is, for the first time, available locally. It's a pricey delicacy that should not be missed.Olde School is packaged singly and appears quite regular until one reads that it is 15 percent alcohol by volume, a high tally even for a barleywine. Olde School is a lively beer, with a dense, crackling and durable cream-colored head. Powerful malt and fruit scents greet the nose. Subtle hints of wood and vanilla join the aroma and then fall before the more prominent smells of earthy hops and alcohol.The intricacy of the nose is a nice prelude to its flavor. Big malt, big hops and big booze are readily apparent to the palate. Yet, there's also a profound, fruity sweetness dissimilar to the hearty, dark fruit tastes of most American barleywines. There's a moment of bittersweet, woody, mildly roasty goodness in the transient middle. Then, the finish kicks in in earnest, and it's a whopper with a nod toward subtlety. Penetrating bitterness begins to build in Olde School's middle. It moves toward the throat, intensifying as it travels. As pronounced warmth rises from the belly, Olde School reaches a crescendo of sharp, hoppy bitterness.The malty presence, initially so dense, has by then diminished but clings to the tongue, furnishing a unique combination of flavors and sensations. With Olde School, Dogfish Head has pushed barleywine toward the extreme and, in the process, created a delicious, unusual and memorable beer that is well-suited to aging or slow sipping on a cold evening. Notes:Alternate sleeve. There is an extremely limited edition of Out of Time, which has a gorgeous alternate sleeve, designed by contest winners.
