As well as being an excellent addition to a study of folktales, this book will be an asset to students learning about Chinese culture.. Bedard's skillful retellings result in concise but engaging folktales. A perfect balance exists between the essential details and the minimalist structure."-Quill & QuireSandra BullockBedard, Michael : Posters and art prints - buy here and SAVE click for more imagesFrom Publishers WeeklyBedard pits the iconic, yellow-billed white ducks featured in his posters against a carnivorous world in this alligator-y allegory. At first, the waterfowl don't seem to have a prayer. They hatch on a conveyor belt in a vast alligator-run factory, then their predators ship them off to Ducktown, where friendly placards encourage them to Eat a Lot and Fatten Up. (Bedard doesn't specify how the victims vanish from their seeming utopia, but alligator restaurants proudly serve duck soup.) Things change after a soft-hearted alligator adopts a duck and lets his pet in on a secret that could save Ducktown: physically fit birds can fly to freedom. Bedard, who styles his unlikely pair as soul mates, practices the same understatement seen in Tim Egan's Friday Night at Hodges' Cafe. His story can be read as a comment on Big Brother, vegetarianism or star-crossed lovers; his dry wit is such that the duck wanders into a Decoy Cafe modeled after Hopper's Nighthawks. Regardless, the narrative is primarily a vehicle for the crisp, mechanical artwork. Bedard uses clean, clear colors, hard edges and pebbled surfaces to construct his smooth-feathered, identical ducks and pudgy, Gumby-green gators. The strongest personality belongs to the anonymous alligator hero, who quells his hankering for his friend the duck by dreaming about chicken. All ages. 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.Read more about Emily Dickinson. The Life of Emily Dickinson by Richard Sewell - Winner of the National Book Award, this massively detailed biography throws a light into the study of the brilliant poet. How did Emily Dickinson, from the small window over her desk, come to see a life that included the horror, exaltation and humor that lives her poetry? With abundance and impartiality, Sewall shows us not just the poet nor the poetry, but the woman and her life. The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, editor Thomas H. Johnson - complete oeuvre--all 1,775 poems--available in its original form, uncorrupted by editorial revision, in one volume. Thomas H. Johnson, a longtime Dickinson scholar, arranged the poems in chronological order as far as could be ascertained (the dates for more than 100 are unknown). This organization allows a wide-angle view of Dickinson's poetic development, from the sometimes-clunky rhyme schemes of her juvenilia, including valentines she wrote in the early 1850s, to the gloomy, hell-obsessed writings from her last years.Emily by Michael Bedard - A young girl who lives across the street from the reclusive Emily Dickinson gets her chance to meet the poet when her mother is invited to play the piano for Emily. The girl sneaks up to Emily's room and exchanges a small gift for an authentic poem, which is included in the book. Based on historic research, great intro to Emily for young children, ages 4-8.Voices and Vision: Emily Dickinson video - This film illuminates the passionate genius of this unconventional recluse, recreating her environment, with commentary by Adrienne Rich, Joyce Carol Oates and others.Crossing26 in. x 24 in.Framed or MountedOrder NowStranger in Paradise39 in. x 24 in.Framed or MountedOrder NowArtEvents for the next 30 days.Wednesday, November 17, 2004.
